Things Can Change at Any Moment

Reflecting on this week of ups and downs…the Medical Intensive Care Unit (MICU) is a grueling, fast paced, and charged environment to workin. Our work involves a great deal of complex medicine/physiology, difficult procedures, ethical dilemmas, codes, and emotional family meetings. You always have to be ready to act as folks are critically ill and things can change at any moment.

While MICU has been the most trying rotation I’ve experienced, it has been a humbling experience and a sobering reminder of just how fragile life is. It has made me feel even more grateful for the little things in life. At the end of the day, I may be exhausted. However, I don’t have a reason to be admitted to the hospital, require intubation and sedation to get through another day, or have to receive the heart breaking news that my loved one is in a critical state.

Stay Calm Through It All

Tomorrow isn’t guaranteed. Take care of yourself, check in on your loved ones often, appreciate those who give you their energy, and be nice to others. I’m coming up on my overnight tomorrow, so here’s to another busy month of stepping out of my comfort zone, learning lots, and trying to stay calm through it all!
