Herniated discs occur when a portion of the disc nucleus pulposus is pushed into the spinal canal, causing pressure onto the spinal cord.
Herniated discs usually occur in the beginning stage of spinal disc degeneration. The nucleus pulposus is pushed out of the annulus, leading to pressure forming onto the spinal canal. This pressure can press onto the spinal nerves, producing severe pain, numbness, and/or tingling sensation. Disc degradation occurs naturally as one ages although can also occur due to a single severe strain. Patients often utilize home therapy to alleviate their symptoms, although consultation with a spine specialist is recommended if symptoms persist after four weeks. Advanced imaging, such as an X-ray, CT scan, or MRI may be requested for improved diagnostic.
