Spinal cord injuries are traumatic conditions that can cause significant disability and can lead to paralysis.
The spinal cord is a collection of nerve tracts extending from the brain. There are nearly 400,000 individuals in the United States living with spinal cord injury (SCI). Males are more likely than females to have an SCI. When the spinal cord is injured, functionality is lost below the level of injury. A complete spinal cord injury causes loss of all feeling and control at and below the site of the injury. An incomplete spinal cord injury leads to some motor and sensory function below the affected area. Rehabilitation can lead to patients seeing some improvement in their neurological function.
