Spinal Conditions and Treatments
Neurosurgery is the field of medicine pertaining to the diagnosis and treatment of conditions in the brain, spinal column, and peripheral nerves in the pediatric and adult population. Neurosurgeons often specialize in a variety of different subspecialities, such as pediatric, vascular, and functional. Despite most people thinking neurosurgeons only operate on the brain, more than 70% of neurosurgeons operate for spinal conditions. Below are select spinal conditions and surgeries Dr. Agarwal performs.
Additionally, robotics are used in spine surgery to improve the accuracy and precision of surgical procedures. This technology allows surgeons to target specific areas of the spine and perform complex procedures with greater control. This can lead to better patient outcomes and a faster recovery. Some spinal robots include a linear optic camera that allows for volumetric assessment of the surgical field. This allows the system to self-detect its location and provide intraoperative collision avoidance. After the surgical plan is complete, the robotic arm is sent to the first location on the patient and the screw placement can proceed with increased accuracy. Other robots do not require a preoperative CT scan, which reduces radiation exposure for the patient. These robots have a lower risk of intraoperative wire migration during surgery, which can decrease the risk of complications. Dr. Agarwal is an expert in robotic neurosurgical procedures.
